A 57-year-old Lithuanian man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after parts of a woman’s dismembered body were found in a suitcase in a house in Peterborough.

Police said they were no longer looking for 57-year-old Vitautas Jokubauskas in connection with the woman’s death and it is understood he is the arrested man.

Officers are however still “keen to trace … Mr Jokubauskas’ partner”, Cambridgeshire Constabulary said in a statement.

Only the woman’s torso was found in the suitcase on Friday. The head, arms and legs remain missing.

In a statement, police said: “The 57-year-old man from Peterborough was arrested in Clipston Walk, Peterborough, at about 7pm this evening (Sunday) and is currently in custody at Thorpe Wood Police Station.

“Officers are no longer appealing for the public's help in tracing 57-year-old Vitautas Jokubauskas.

“The body has not been identified … police are keen to trace a woman, believed to be Mr Jokubauskas’ partner, who is only described as being about 40, slim, with black hair and also Lithuanian. No further details on her are known at this time.”

A post mortem was due be carried out at Peterborough City Hospital on Monday.

“The murder is being treated as an isolated incident and a dedicated murder team has been set up to investigate,” the police statement added.
