The body of a baby girl was found dumped in a plastic bin-bag in woodland yesterday.

Police said an autopsy had suggested that the baby had been still-born and appealed to the public to help them find the mother, whom they believe may need medical attention.

A man who was walking his dog at High Green, Sheffield, found the black bag, tied at the top, which contained the body of the baby girl. He went to a nearby house to raise the alarm at around 4pm and police later recovered the body, along with a white Asda carrier bag.

South Yorkshire Police spokesman Jim Greensmith said the body had been in the wood for a few days at the most. He urged anyone with information about the mother to contact police on 0114 220 2020.
