A cyclist is fighting for his life after crashing into a Ford Transit van.

The 46-year-old man, from Mayfield, East Sussex, was hit on the eastbound carriageway of the A27 in Fontwell, West Sussex, at the junction of Yapton Lane, by the white long wheelbase Ford Transit van at 7.25am today, Sussex Police said.

He was taken by air ambulance to King's College Hospital in south London, where he remains in a critical condition, the spokesman said.

The van driver, a 22-year-old man from Southampton, Hampshire, was unhurt.

The spokesman said: "It was necessary to shut the road for three hours to allow the helicopter to land and for the cyclist to be treated at the roadside by emergency paramedics.

"Both we and the highway authority would like to thank the public for their patience whilst the road was closed."

Pc Clare Cranswick, from the Sussex road policing unit, is appealing for witnesses who may have seen the crash or the vehicles just beforehand, to call her on 101 quoting Operation Damask.
