Britain and Argentina separately marked the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War yesterday amid renewed tension between the two countries over the fate of the South Atlantic islands, as veterans and islanders gathered by the sea in Stanley, pictured.

The leaders of both nations used the anniversary to reaffirm their claims to the remote archipelago, as relatives of those who died in the conflict attended memorial services. Speaking at a rally in the southern city of Ushuaia, Argentina's President, Cristina Fernandez, attacked Britain for its "ridiculous and absurd stance" on the islands, and urged it to concede sovereignty of "Las Malvinas". A series of rallies were held across Argentina to back the calls.

David Cameron had earlier paid tribute to the soldiers who died in the conflict, and said Britain played a role in "righting a profound wrong".
