A driver died and a passenger was hurt when a tree fell on their vehicle in County Durham while 15 empty cars were crushed when the roof blew off industrial units under construction in the same area. The Met Office said that winds of up to 80mph pounded the north and west but predicted the weather would calm down by mid-week. "The strongest winds will affect parts of Northern Ireland, the central Lowlands and southern Scotland and parts of northern England," said chief forecaster Bob Wilderspin.

Some sports fixtures were cancelled last night, and thousands were left without power as winds battered the north. CE Electric UK said it was working to restore the power supply to about 10,000 properties in the north east of England.
