Independent on Sunday competition: An opportunity to take part in a unique occasion to mark this year's Remembrance Sunday

Two readers who best complete the sentence: "We should remember the First World War because..." in fewer than 100 words will each receive tickets to a special performance of War Horse

"At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them." Those words from a verse of Laurence Binyon's "For the Fallen" will be read aloud at Remembrance services the length and breadth of the country next Sunday. His poem, first published in September 1914 when the war with Germany and its allies was still in its infancy and many remained hopeful it would all be over by Christmas, promises that the sacrifice made by millions of men and women during the conflict would be remembered.

Nearly a century later that promise remains unbroken, in large part thanks to the efforts of writers such as Michael Morpurgo, whose phenomenally successful War Horse book and stage and film adaptations continue to captivate readers and audiences. Now The Independent on Sunday is offering readers an opportunity to take part in a unique occasion to mark this year's Remembrance Sunday, and win a new edition of War Horse.

The event, called Anthems for Peace, will feature Michael Morpurgo reading from and discussing War Horse together with Rae Smith, the award-winning designer of the National Theatre's staging of War Horse and the illustrator of the new edition, which is published on Thursday. The second half of the performance will be a reading by Virginia McKenna of Morpurgo's book The Best Christmas Present in the World accompanied by songs and carols by Voices at the Door. The Best Christmas Present in the World is the author's moving story of the Christmas truce in 1914.

The Independent on Sunday, together with the National Theatre and publishers Egmont, invites readers to attend the special performance at the New London Theatre, where War Horse is currently being staged, on Sunday 10 November. Two readers who best complete the sentence: "We should remember the First World War because..." in fewer than 100 words will each receive a set of four tickets so that family and friends can also attend the performance, as well as two signed art prints by Rae Smith. Five runners-up will receive signed copies of the new edition of War Horse.
