An east London police station was shut overnight after a man smashed through the counter screen, officers said.

The intruder was arrested and Dagenham Police Station, on Rainham Road South, remained closed overnight on Thursday.

Barking and Dagenham Police said in a tweet the man entered Dagenham Police Station at around 10.37pm on Thursday and "became increasingly aggressive and agitated towards staff".

He managed to climb through the broken screen before officers used a taser on him and quickly arrested in a nearby corridor on suspicion of criminal damage, police said.

The station remained shut overnight and residents were told to use their nearest alternative police station if they needed in-person police help.

The police reminded the public that emergency assistance is available by calling 999 and crimes can be reported on 101.
