M1 plane crash: Two injured as aircraft comes down in field next to motorway

A plane crashed near the M1 in Nottinghamshire on Saturday, injuring the two people on board.

Part of the motorway was closed near junction 26 at Nuthall in Nottinghamshire after the accident at around 1.30pm.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said officials from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch had been sent to the scene to look into the cause of the crash.

Police would not give details of the passengers’ injuries and the ambulance service was not immediately available for comment.

It is not known where the light aircraft was travelling to or from but the Hucknall Aerodrome is nearby.

Craig Wing, 31, from Clifton, told the BBC he was approaching junction 27 when he saw the aircraft was in trouble.

He said: “It lost control and it just dipped straight down. He [the pilot] managed to swerve from the M1 and into the field.”

Mr Wing, who described the aircraft as a glider, added: "I've gone straight over to the plane and obviously seen the two people, it was very upsetting.

"I had to do what I had to do. I wanted to try and help."

The Highways Agency said the southbound carriageway of the M1 had completely reopened by 4.30pm but warned that delays would take time to clear.
