Male shopper dies after falling from an escalator in Debenhams Oxford Street

A man has died after he fell off an escalator in the busy Debehnams department store on Oxford Street.

Police and Ambulance crews were called to the department store in West London after receiving reports that a man had fallen from one of the escalators, reportedly from the third floor.

The London Ambulance Service said the patient was pronounced dead at the scene just after 6pm.

It added that it had treated five people for shock.

An eyewitness told London 24 that a number of children were in the shop and saw the incident.

The witness, who had not been named, added: “I heard a loud bang, commotion followed and a man was lying on the ground. I initially thought it was fireworks.”

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: Police were called at 6:15pm to Debenhams in Oxford Street to a man who had fallen from an escalator.

“Police and London Ambulance Service attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.”

A Debenhams spokesperson confirmed that police were called to the Oxford Street Debenhams store at 18.15 last night “following a serious incident where a man fell from the third floor”.

The spokesperson added: “At this stage there are thought to be no suspicious circumstances.

“Police and London Ambulance Service attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Debenhams continues to work with the authorities on the matter.”
