A man and a young child have died in a car crash near Bedford on Christmas Day.

The man, who has not been named, died at the scene after the collision on the eastbound carriage of the A421 at around 11pm between Marsh Leys and Marston, Bedfordshire.

The young child was airlifted to hospital but was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A woman, also in the car at the time of the crash, was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with serious injuries. All three individuals are from Bedfordshire, the local police force confirmed.

“I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision to call police,” investigating Bedfordshire police officer Sergeant Simon Goldsmith said.

“Any death on the road is tragic but this incident is even more poignant given the day it occurred. Next of kin have been informed and our specialist family liaison officers are providing support to relatives.”

The A421 remains closed in both directions but it is expected to reopen on Saturday afternoon.
