A police force is being investigated after a man died following a "short period" in custody.

The 42-year-old was held in Chesterfield after being arrested by officers from Derbyshire Police, over a “domestic incident”, according to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Around an-hour-and-a-half later he was taken by ambulance to Chesterfield Royal Hospital, where he died earlier this week.

The IOPC is now reviewing CCTV footage from the custody suite and body worn video.

Police officers and staff who had contact with the man or witnessed his detention have provided the IOPC with their initial accounts of the incident, and investigators have contacted the man’s family.

A post mortem examination is due to take place on Saturday and HM Coroner has been notified.

“Our sympathies are with the man’s family and everyone else affected by his death," said the IOPC’s regional director for the Midlands, Derrick Campbell.

"Our inquiries are at an early stage and we will be carrying out a thorough investigation into the events”.
