A man died just hours after he was seen by hundreds of people as he ran naked through Manchester backstreets in a “confused” state.

Numerous people reported seeing a man wearing nothing but shoes and socks trying to enter nightclubs and restaurants around the city’s Northern Quarter on Friday night.

Police believe that sometime after being turned away from Bluu Bar by bouncers, the man made his way to a nearby building site where he fell 50 feet down an unfinished lift shaft.

The naked man was initially seen running around the Thomas Street area of Manchester at around 8.30pm last Friday evening, with a number of Twitter users posting photographs of him on the social networking site.

Witnesses say he later entered the busy Solita restaurant on Turner Street, standing in a “confused state” at the back of the room until staff approached him and he fled – seemingly scared.

He is thought to have subsequently attempted to enter a number of nearby nightclubs, including Bluu Bar.

A member of Bluu Bar staff said “He’d been seen in the general area around the bar although it wasn’t clear where he had come from and he didn’t seem to be with anyone”.

A body matching the man’s description was spotted at the bottom of an unfinished lift shaft by a construction worker yesterday afternoon.

Medics and site workers struggled for around three hours to reach the man, but he was found to be dead when they managed to do so.

Officers are now trying seeking to establish the events surrounding the man’s tragic death, with a post-mortem investigation taking place today.
