A man has been questioned by police under caution after a video, showing an elderly man being knocked to the ground outside Aintree racecourse, was uploaded to the internet.

A man is seen barging into another elderly gentleman who stumbles and then hits his head on the ground, to which onlookers are heard gasping before rushing to his aid.

The man who was knocked to the ground is believed to have suffered bruising to his face and was treated by ambulance staff, before being taken to hospital.

Many people took to social media to express their views on the incident, which is being treated as assault by police.

Jackie Taylor wrote on Facebook: “Drunk or not that gobsh**e needs to take responsibility for what he done to that innocent man. The guy filming is just as bad too! Pr**ks!”

While Julie Annette Calland said: "Please wish the poor gent a speedy recovery after what was undoubtedly an unprovoked assault. As to the scumbag bully who attacked him and the scumbag weasel who filmed it I hope you deal with them severely."

Merseyside Police issued a statement, which read: “Following his voluntary attendance at a police station last night, a 34-year-old man from Formby in Sefton was interviewed under caution before being released pending further enquiries.

“Officers have traced the man who was knocked to the floor. He is a 63-year-old man from Skelmersdale in West Lancashire.

It added: “Officers believe the incident shown in the video footage happened at around 7pm on Thursday 9th April in Ormskirk Road.”

Police enquiries are continuing and anyone with any information is encouraged to call the police on 101.
