Next has said it is "terribly sorry for the distress caused" after a pair of their jelly sandals made a two-year-old's foot bleed.

Pictures showed Lisa Connor's daughter, Esmé, with cuts and blood on her right foot after she wore the shoes for 30 minutes.

Ms Connor told the Daily Mail: "Esmé was in absolute agony. I couldn't believe it because she had only been wearing them for half an hour.

"It's not like she was running around in them for hours. She was just plodding around the house and then came running in in tears.

"There was blood all round her ankle and on the soles of her foot. Of course there will be new shoes that rub, but this is ridiculous."

Next's customer service has said they have asked for the shoes to be returned to they can examine them.

However, Ms Connor believes the shoes should be taken off sale.

She added: "I think they should be taken off sale before any more children get hurt. She's not been able to put any shoes on since."

"Niall [Cartmell, her fiancé] was able to wash her feet and put on a plaster but they're still incredibly sore. It's only her right foot that is affected strangely.

"The sandals are made from a jelly material so I don't know if that's what's caused the problem. The worst cut is just under her ankle bone."

A Next spokesperson told The Independent: “We are terribly sorry for the distress caused and we are taking this matter very seriously.

"We’ve asked for this pair of shoes to be returned so we can carry out a detailed inspection of this shoe, since this is the first complaint of this nature that we’ve received.”
