The reinterment of Richard III looks likely to be delayed after a key decision over the construction of his tomb was put off.

Richard’s remains, dug up under a council car park in Leicester, are due to be reinterred at the city’s cathedral, although a legal challenge by distant descendants who want him buried in York is going through the courts.

Proposals by the cathedral to accommodate the tomb could have seen Richard laid to rest next summer. But the Cathedral Fabrics Commission, which must rubber-stamp a plan to rebuild part of the cathedral to house the king’s tomb, has deferred its response pending a court ruling.
