A teenage boy was missing today after the dinghy he was in capsized on a pond.

A spokeswoman for Surrey Police said the vessel carrying two boys turned over in Heathfield Pond in Cobham at around 4.45pm yesterday.

A 17-year-old was taken to Epsom General Hospital in a stable condition while an extensive search operation was launched for the other teenager.

Police, the ambulance service and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service all attended the scene, while the police helicopter, dog teams and local residents also helped.

A specialist dive team from Sussex carried out an underwater search until 2am and will resume at around 9.30am today, the police spokeswoman said.

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said a body had been recovered by police divers but formal identification had not yet taken place.

The police spokeswoman said formal identification of the body was unlikely to be carried out today but officers were "satisfied" it was that of the missing teenager.

She added that a post mortem examination was to be carried out tomorrow at St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey.
