A man escaped with just minor injuries after his mobility scooter became stuck at a level crossing and was hit by a train travelling at 100mph.

Paramedics were called to the crossing at Kelvedon, near Colchester in Essex, at 11am yesterday, after the 43-year-old was thrown into the road when his scooter was clipped by the train.

One of the fire service officers who attended the incident, Station Officer John Harris, said that the man was "extremely lucky". He said: "If he had been only a couple of inches further forward he would have undoubtedly been killed." PA
