Tube strike: How do I get to Wimbledon?

With industrial action set to close the entire network, alternative modes of transport will be required to get to the All England Lawn Tennis Club

Getting to the All England Lawn Tennis Club is not all that easy at the best of times, but this week's tube strike will make it all the harder for those travelling to Wimbledon.

In truth, the London Underground could only get you part of the way there anyway. The District Line stops of Southfields and Wimbledon are 15 and 20 minutes' walk respectively and taxi sharing from both stations is de rigeur at busy times.

So, what are the alternatives?

Overground train

There's a regular train service from London Waterloo to Wimbledon rail station. At Wimbledon, board the London General shuttle bus, which depart for the grounds every five minutes on average. Or get one of those fabled taxi-shares from the rank.

Some long-distance trains to London also stop at Wimbledon, from places such as Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth and Exeter.

Tram

If you're coming from deepest South London, trams run every 10-15 minutes from East Croydon Station. It takes around 26 minutes to get to Wimbledon.

Bus

London General operates a bus service direct from St Pancras, Euston, Baker Street, Marble Arch and Victoria to The Championships, departing every 30 minutes.

Car

The All England Lawn Tennis Club lies between SW19 5AG and SW19 5AF. Or simply find the club on your SatNav. Be prepared for jams, and a whole world of parking and driving restrictions.

Taxi/minicab

A black cab from central London is likely to cost in the region of £30-40. A minicab hailed through Uber could cost around £20 - or more at busy times, when so-called 'surge pricing' means prices are higher.

Rickshaw

There are plenty in central London. Get ready to haggle.

Cycle

It will take you 48 minutes from central London. Sadly the southern-most 'Boris Bike' rank is some way north of Wimbledon, in Wandsworth.
