Twenty-nine people taken to hospital after car crash on M4 motorway near Cardiff

One woman had to be airlifted and six of those injured are in a serious condition

Twenty-nine people have been taken to hospital after two car crashes on the M4 motorway near Cardiff.

The collisions are believed to have involved a small 29-seater coach and five cars on the M4 near Cardiff.

One woman was airlifted to hospital and another 28 people were taken to three separate hospitals by ambulance.

The wounded people were taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Royal Glamorgan and Princess of Wales hospital.

Six of the injuries are said to be serious, though none of them are believe to be life-threatening or life-changing.

The road was shut between junction 33 and junction 34 following the accidents.

There were still tailbacks in the area several hours after the incident, which happened just before lunchtime today.

BBC News reports witnesses who said the first accident happened after the coach collided with a 4x4 and three other cars on the eastbound carriageway.

At the same time, on the other side of the road, a car overturned.
