UK weather: Temperatures to be back in double figures towards the weekend as frost thaws

If you found yourself scraping ice off your car windscreen this morning and hunting out your woolliest scarf, it may have seemed that winter had well and truly arrived.

But the cold snap is not set to last, with the weather becoming milder as the weekend approaches.

Today the frost has thawed, giving way to sunshine across most of the country - although a band of cloud and outbreaks of rain are expected to move southeastwards into northwest Scotland and Northern Ireland during the afternoon.

Tomorrow morning will be cold again, with fog patches that will gradually clear throughout the day. Forecasters say it will remain chilly but sunny, with showers spreading north into southern counties

However as the week continues temperatures will warm up – although winds will gradually strengthen.

A Met Office spokesperson said the conditions are “fairly typical of autumn weather”.

“It’s not going to be particularly cold over the next few days – maybe a degree or two below average.

“Towards the weekend temperatures will be peaking and are set to be back in double figures next week.”

There are currently 12 flood warnings in place across England and Wales - all in the east and southeast - as well as 42 flood alerts, following heavy rain at the weekend.

However, as the week continues, rain is more likely across the west and northwest of the country. Residents in eastern parts of the country can therefore expect to see drier weather by the end of the week.
