Wednesday is set to be the hottest day of the year with parts of the UK expected to see highs of up to 25C – making it warmer than some parts of Greece or Italy.

Forecasters predict temperatures will be double the average of 11.4C for the UK and 12.5C for England and balmy conditions are set to continue throughout the week.

Sun-worshipers in the south-east of England should also remember their sun cream today when temperatures peak at 24C – higher than the maximum temperature of 22C forecast for Athens.

However, the north-south divide in weather experienced over the past few days will extend to Wednesday. Clouds will cover parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, while the rain in the north and north-west will continue throughout today and possibly into tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the fog covering regions further south this morning will burn away fairly quickly, to be replaced by sunny spells.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Tuesday is looking like an increasingly sunny and warm day. Temperatures could reach 23C, maybe even 24C in London and up to 21C all across the south, the exception being around coastal parts, particularly in Devon and Cornwall.

“Cloudier conditions in the north mean temperatures will struggle but will still be average for this time of year, with highs of 10-13C.

“On Wednesday, 25C is definitely a possibility in London and places near north-east London, making it the hottest day of the year. The warmest day of the year so far was 10 April, which saw highs of 21.9C.

“Temperatures will fall somewhat later in the week, but there is still likely to be a fair amount of fine weather across the south in particular. On Thursday across much of the UK it will generally be a fine day with bright and sunny spells and highs of 20 maybe down towards the south-west.

“It will generally be quite a fine week with some warm weather throughout.”
