Video: Pedestrians in lucky escape after crash

Driver narrowly avoided two walkers after veering off busy road in Manchester

Two pedestrians’ lucky escape was caught on camera after they narrowly avoided being crushed by an out-of-control car near Manchester on Saturday evening.

The grey Mini Cooper was travelling out of Manchester at around 7.15pm when the 21-year-old driver lost control at the junction of Dane Street.

In the video the driver can be seen veering over the central reservation and obliterating the concrete and iron railings separating pedestrians from traffic before crashing into the local sixth form, Hopwood Hall College, just in front of the two walkers.

After the crash the road was closed for four hours, with the two individuals disappearing before police arrived.

The entire episode was caught on CCTV and is being used by police to trace the two pedestrians in order to determine what caused the crash.

Police Constable Simon McEvoy of Rochdale division said: “We are investigating the circumstances leading up to this collision and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to call us as soon as possible.”

Although no pedestrians were hurt, the young driver suffered head injuries and was taken to Salford Royal Infirmary, where his condition remains stable.
