A woman has died after falling from a balcony on the third floor of a Primark store.

Police were called to attend the scene at the Church Street, Liverpool branch of the clothes shop by paramedics at 6pm on Tuesday.

The 57-year-old woman was discovered at the bottom of the escalators on the shop ground floor.

She had been seen moments earlier on a balcony next to the escalators on the third floor, police said.

A doctor who was in near the store at the time treated the woman at the scene before paramedics arrived.

She was taken to the Royal University Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition but was pronounced dead a short while afterwards.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish a cause of death.

A police spokesman said: "Merseyside Police can confirm that an investigation is under way after a woman was found with serious injuries inside a clothes store in Liverpool city centre on Tuesday evening.

"Detectives are speaking to witnesses and viewing CCTV to establish the full circumstances of the incident."

A three-year-old girl fell through a gap between the escalators at the same store five years ago, to the lower ground floor while travelling up to the third floor with her family.

She suffered multiple injuries including a broken leg and arm but survived.

Anyone with any relevant information about yesterday's incident should call St Anne Street CID on 0151 777 4065 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
