David Cameron gaffe says he loves to spend holidays in Holcombe instead Holkham

An unfortunate gaffe appeared in an opinion piece by David Cameron for a local newspaper where he seemed to confuse the location of one of his own holiday destinations.

Extolling the virtues of Norfolk in an attempt to show his familiarity with popular British seaside spots, Mr Cameron reportedly mentioned previous "holidays on the coast at Holcombe", implying that he had been there on more than one occasion.

Unluckily for him, "no one in the county had heard of it" – although there is a small village called Holcombe in Devon on the other side of the country.

The Daily Mail reports that enquiries to Number 10 revealed that Mr Cameron was in fact referring to Holkham – and the error was blamed on the person who transcribed the piece (probably on work experience).

Holkham beach was voted the best in the country in 2015 by 100 travel writers and editors, and is estimated to attract around 500,000 visitors every year.

Locals questioned whether his claim to visit the area was true, with one telling the Mail: "I have never been aware of him holidaying in this area. From what I read in the newspaper, he likes to holiday in the West Country."

Previous gaffes by Mr Cameron include the time he forgot his favourite football team, and a badly-timed joke about Yorkshire where he forgot his mic was still turned on.
