The Liberal Democrats have rejected David Cameron’s suggestion that they leaked a memo alleging that Nicola Sturgeon wanted to see him remain as Prime Minister.

In an interview with The Independent, Mr Cameron was asked whether he suspected the Lib Dems had a hand in leaking the report of a conversation between the SNP First Minister and Sylvie Bermann, the French ambassador to the UK. He replied: “One does wonder.”

Alistair Carmichael, the Lib Dem Scottish Secretary, has conceded that the report was written in the Scotland Office.

But the Lib Dems hit back angrily at the Prime Minister’s suggestion. Nick Clegg said Mr Cameron should not play at being a "one man detective" and insisted Mr Carmichael was not responsible for the leak. He said: "It is really very silly - it is election time - for David Cameron to start pointing fingers like that.”

A Lib Dem spokesman said: “David Cameron’s attempt at mudslinging does a terrible job at masking what’s at the heart of this matter. The Scottish people have a right to know that the Conservatives and SNP are involved in an invisible Faustian pact.”

He added: “He wants Sturgeon to triumph in Scotland to pave his way back to Number 10, while the SNP secretly yearn for a Tory win as they misguidedly believe it will increase their chances of another Scottish referendum. The leak was not from a Liberal Democrat and that is the end of the matter.”

Ms Sturgeon has described the memo’s contents as “100 per cent untrue” and called for a Cabinet Office leak inquiry to report quickly. But some Whitehall insiders believe that it may not be concluded until after the election.
