While the other party leaders had left their "safe seats" to canvas for national support around Britain on the final day of the election campaign, Nigel Farage has been trying to win friends personally in the seat where he will stand tomorrow.

But things didn't exactly go to plan on a walkabout in Ramsgate, Kent on Wednesday afternoon, when the Ukip leader was confronted by a member of the public giving out leaflets attacking his background.

While Mr Farage tried to reason with the man, a member of his entourage told the prospective voter in his constituency: "This isn't about you!" - perhaps not the message the party wants to be putting out.

It was reminiscent of a recent gaffe from David Cameron, when the Prime Minister said in a speech that Thursday's vote would be a "career-defining moment" for him. He hastily corrected himself, saying he had meant "country".

According to a video of the heated exchange between Mr Farage and the protester, the Ukip leader is accused of being "sexist", "racist", "homophobic" and a former banker - to which the Ukip leader said: "You haven't even got your facts right mate."

The protester can be seen taking issue with Mr Farage over the party's support for its Bristol candidate John Langley, who has a second job as veteran porn star Johnny Rockard, at which point the politician walks away.

In a separate incident in Ramsgate on Wednesday afternoon, another man who said he had confronted Mr Farage claims he was later punched in the face by an apparent Ukip supporter.

Dan Thompson, a 40-year-old artist from Margate in Kent, told The Independent he had also exchanged strong words with the Ukip leader, calling him "a nasty little fascist".

"I wasn't mean or abusive - I shook his hand," Mr Thompson said. "But I told him the politics he's brought here have divided a community, and he's created disharmony where there was harmony."

Mr Thompson said that around 10 minutes later he and his wife were approached by an "incredibly abusive" man driving a car with Ukip flags on it. "I stepped in front of my wife and he punched me in the face," Mr Thompson said. He said he'd reported the incident to the police.
