Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt is “scared” that social media like the dating app Tinder could be the future for political campaigning.

Mr Hunt, speaking to ITV’s Agenda programme, stressed that he did not “use Tinder” personally as he argued for politicians to meet voters face to face.

Asked about the rise of social media by campaigners, he said: “I think lots of people use social media and it can be pretty scary.

“If you look at something like Tinder… if that’s the way we’re going to choose our politicians then I think there is a role for standing on someone’s doorstep and chatting to them the old-fashioned way.”

He insisted that the Tories were not running a particularly negative campaign, saying: “The attacks go both ways. It happens in elections.”

But Mr Hunt admitted that American-style attack ads did have a downside.

“Politicians end up being more wooden and cautious than all of us would like to be as politicians,” he said.
