Jeremy Corbyn pledges to push for a second EU referendum if Labour members vote for it

Jeremy Corbyn has suggested Labour could shift towards backing a new referendum on the final deal as Brexit was set to dominate the party's annual conference.

The Labour leader said he would be prepared to change policy if party members backed a fresh vote but he believed a general election would be a better way to solve the crisis.

Mr Corbyn also vowed to join with rebel Tories to vote down Theresa May’s Brexit plans in parliament if they did not meet Labour’s tests, with The Independent revealing the party would then seek a motion of no confidence in the government "within days".

It comes as thousands of activists descended on Liverpool for the party's annual gathering, which is set to shine a spotlight on divisions over Brexit, handling of antisemitism allegations and changes to party rules.

Moving away from Labour for a moment to the government's Brexit policy.

Dominic Raab is speaking to Andrew Marr about Theresa May's trip to Salzburg, where EU leaders told her that her proposals won't work.

Mr Raab says it is 'a bump in the road'. 'We will hold our nerve, we will keep our cool'. The PM's plans are 'serious proposals' and the government will not flip from plan to plan like a 'diplomatic butterfly'.

He says no-deal planning is ongoing and more technical notices will be published on Monday.

Dominic Raab says a no-deal Brexit 'would not be the end of the world'.

'It won't be a walk in the park but we are planning for a no-deal.'

He also said that a Canada-style deal was "off the table" - something favoured by Tory Eurosceptics like Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Reports that Downing Street is planning a general election 'is for the birds', Mr Raab said. He explicitly ruled out the claims, which are published in the Sunday Times today.

Jeremy Corbyn tells Marr that we could be close to a general election and Labour is ready for it.

Asked about Labour's ideas to break the Brexit impasse, he said May is looking two ways at the same time and [international trade secretary] Liam Fox is trying to undermine standards and deregulate in pursuit of trade.

Labour will not do that, he says.

Asked whether he would feel obliged to respect a vote by delegates to support a second referendum, Mr Corbyn said: "Let's see what comes out of conference. Obviously I'm bound by the democracy of our party."

The Labour leader said there would be a vote on Brexit at the Liverpool conference, but said it was not yet known exactly what question would be put to delegates.

Asked if he would vote down the Brexit deal, he said he would do that if the PM's plans don't meet Labour's tests, risking a no-deal.

If there was a general election, he said Labour would go back to the negotiating table.

Marr asks Corbyn if he is an antisemite. He categorically denies it and says he has fought racism all his life.

He's shown an antisemitic mural that was put on a wall in his constituency, which effectively kicked off the row earlier this year.

He says he was worried about murals being taken down but it has been taken down and it was right to do so. He was too hasty in his judgement.

Marr plays him a clip which caused offence to some in the Jewish community, where he said some pro-Israeli protestors did not understand British irony.

He said the protestors were being rude to the Palestinian ambassador and he was trying to defend him.

Mr Corbyn is asked about the wreath-laying ceremony in Tunisia in 2014, where people involved in the Black September terror attack are buried.

He says of course he does not those involved. He did not know they were there at the time.

Corbyn is also played footage from an interview with former chief rabbi Jonathan Sacks, where he compared Mr Corbyn to Enoch Powell.

Corbyn says this is 'excessive' and he completely disagrees with Powell, and he saw the effect of his speech growing up in the West Midlands.

Corbyn says 'I am an antiracist and I have been an antiracist all my life'. The party must be a safe and welcoming place for everyone, he says.

He says he 'loves every moment' of being Labour leader and he wants to lead it into the general election.

He says 'maybe it would be good to have a woman leader' but he is not planning to create a vacancy any time soon.

That's it from Jeremy Corbyn for now.
