David Cameron stepped up his call for Sepp Blatter to quit as president of Fifa, accusing him of presiding over the "ugly side of the beautiful game".

The Prime Minister said it was unacceptable for any figure to continue leading an organisation that had seen the level of accusations and corruption experienced by the world football governing body.

Mr Cameron used a press conference after his meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to urge Mr Blatter to stand down, saying "the sooner that happens the better."

"In my view, he should go. You can't have accusations of corruption at this level and on this scale in this organisation and pretend the person currently leading it is the right person to take it forward," he said. "That can't be the case.

Mr Blatter is expected to be re-elected as Fifa president for the fifth time later today, despite the organisation experiencing its biggest crisis in its long history after 14 people were arrested on charges of corruption.
