A Conservative MP has thanked one angry voter who may have inadvertently voted for the Welsh politician after scrawling a penis next to his name on the ballot paper.

Glyn Davies, who was re-elected with 45 per cent of the vote to the Monthomeryshire seat in Wales, wrote on Facebook he was “grateful” to the unknown graffiti artist.

“One voter decided to draw a detailed representation of a penis instead of a cross in my box on one ballot paper,” he wrote.

But voting officials deemed the phallus to be a legit vote as it had been carefully drawn within the limits the box.

The 71-year-old MP added: “Not sure the artist meant it to count, but I am grateful. If I knew who it was, I would like to thank him (or her) personally.”

Commenting below the original Facebook post Mr Davies, who successfully underwent surgery for colon cancer in 2002, added it was “one of the funniest election incidents I’ve ever heard of.”
