A British travel writer was identified yesterday as one of the 16 people killed by a terrorist bomb that was detonated in a busy café on Thursday in a tourist hotspot in Morocco.

Peter Moss, 59, was named by the London-based Jewish Chronicle, where he used to work, as being a victim of the attack on the Cafe Argana in the popular Djemma el-Fna square in Marrakech. He had two children.

The Foreign Office Minister, Alistair Burt, said: "We believe that a British national was among the 16 people killed. My thoughts are with their friends and families and all those affected by this distressing incident. We are in touch with next of kin."

Officials in Morocco said the bomb was packed with nails and was set off remotely rather than by a suicide bomber. More than 50 people were injured. Of the dead, 13 were foreign nationals, including French, Dutch and Canadians. The Israeli government said that a Jewish couple from Shanghai had also been killed.
