A dinosaur the size of a cat and described as a cross between "a bird, a vampire and a porcupine" has been identified in a rock from South Africa.

Paul Sereno, the University of Chicago palaeontologist who made the discovery, has named it Pegomastax africanus, or "thick jaw from Africa".

It lived between 100 million and 200 million years ago.
