Up to 40 people injured in California high school stage collapse

No one was seriously hurt in the incident on Saturday night

Officials said up to 40 people were injured when a packed stage collapsed at a high school in southern California.

The Anaheim fire department said fire fighters and medics responded to a call shortly before 11pm on Saturday, after the stage gave way during a performance at all-boys Catholic school Servite High.  

The dispatch supervisory office said up to 40 patients had been transported to hospitals, but most of the injuries are minor and none is life threatening. 

The office said it was not immediately clear if the injured are students.

Anaheim Police Department spokesman Lt. Tim Schmidt told the Los Angeles Times that about 250 girls from sister all-girls Catholic school Rosary High were on the stage at the time.

"Early investigations suggest the front of the stage gave out due to weight," he said.

County fire investigators were on the scene trying to determine the exact cause of the collapse.

The students were performing in “Red and Gold”, Rosary High’s annual musical theatre challenge, which sees teams put on choral, dance, drama and other performances.
