A picture of an abandoned dog left “frozen with fear” has been shared over 120,000 times to highlight the plight of animals left in shelters.

Tammy Graves, from North Carolina, posted the picture to Facebook and described it as an "irresponsible owner issue".

Ms Graves set up The Haley Graves Foundation, a rescue orgainsation which looks after and saves abandoned dogs.

She said the dog, named June Cash, was staying with 275 other dogs in a place that “smells like death”.

“He lays frozen in fear, in a puddle of his own urine. Afraid to move, afraid to make eye contact, thinking just maybe he can fade away into this wall,” Ms Graves posted on Facebook.

Ms Graves left an update the next day saying June Cash had been freed and uploaded a photo the dog sitting on a cushion with blankets.

“She loves her new bed, her toys and treats!” Ms Graves said.

“We are moving slow with her, June Cash has as we can tell never been to a Veterinarian so each procedure is new to her. Everything is a new introduction.”

A gofundme page has been set up to raise money for a crisis medial fund for the Haley Graves Foundation.
