Adonis Ortiz, 3, survives five-organ transplant

Adonis is expected to make a full recovery

A three-year-old boy is recovering in a Miami hospital after undergoing a five-organ transplant.

Adonis Ortiz was born with gastroschisis, causing his intestines to protrude through an opening in the abdominal wall and form on the outside of his body.

His condition meant his only hope for survival was a five-organ liver, pancreas, stomach and small and large intestine transplant. The toddler has been undergoing operations since he was three-months-old.

Surgeons contacted his family on 28 October to inform them a donor match had been found and the operation was performed at the Miami Transplant Institute just a few hours later.

Ms Ortiz, a certified nurse, said she had seen teenage patients with the same condition as her son, which gave her hope following his diagnosis. “I’ve seen patients who were 18, 19-years-old,’’ she said, “and they were fine. So I was like, ‘Why can’t my baby be the same?’"

“Everything that they always kept telling me was that he has a 50/50 chance,’’ she said. “Nobody would ever give me any other percentage until now. So, to hear that he has like an 80 to 85 percent chance, it’s a lot better than 50.’’

Ms Ortiz told reporters gathered at a press conference at the Jackson Memorial Hospital where her son is recovering that the family are looking forward to spending their first Christmas at home together.

Adonis is expected to make a full recovery.
