African-Americans accused of loud noise by racist flyers put up in student housing block

The Irvine Police Department said it is investigating it as a possible hate incident

Flyers put up around an apartment block housing students from the University of California, Irvine, have singled out African-American residents for criticism about noise levels.

The racist flyers, were singled out by a student, who posted a video on her Instagram handle of the posters in the elevator of her apartment complex.

Reading the note, she quoted the flyer: “We would also like to remind our African-American residents to keep conversation down and reduce music levels between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM.”

“Multiple complaints have been made regarding this issue.”

In a separate post the student, who had identified herself only as TT, said: “Call me crazy, but (there's) only about eight people or less I've seen that are black in my building so what's really the issue?”

Building managers have denied any association with the flyer.

“This flyer is a fake. It wasn't produced by us. It wasn't posted by us. I don't know where it came from,” said Marty McKenna, a representative for Equity Residential, the management company that runs the apartment complex.

The apartment complex is used as a residence by some students at the University of California, but it isn't affiliated with the university. The University of California, Irvine has distanced itself from the complex in statements on social media.

The Irvine Police Department said it is investigating it as a possible hate incident.

Craig Reem, director of public affairs and communications at Irvine Police Department said: “It isn't a question about whether it actually is a hate incident or not because it is. We're investigating where the the fliers came from and who posted it.”
