Basketball: US team ends 310-game losing streak

One of the longest losing streaks in American sport has ended in dramatic fashion.

The California Institute of Technology's basketball team nailed a free throw with three seconds left on the clock on Tuesday night to win their first league game since 1985. Fans crowded the home court when the final buzzer signalled a 46-45 victory for the Caltech Beavers over local rivals Occidental College.

The moment was captured by rolling television news crews, since it came after 310 straight defeats.

None of the players on the Beavers' roster was born the last time they won.
