The man accused of shooting and killing three Muslim students in North Carolina had at least a dozen weapons in his home along with a large quantity of ammunition, search warrants show, according to an Associated Press report.

The warrants were filed Friday in Durham County court and showed the items recovered by police when they searched Craig Hicks’ condominium this week. Mr Hicks was arrested and charged with the murders of Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, Yusor Mohammad and Deah Shaddy Barakat.

Police found three handguns and several rifles and shotguns, the warrants show. Mr Hicks also had a handgun on his person at the time of his arrest. It should be noted that it is legal in North Carolina to own this many guns.

The alleged murders have shocked the US, and President Barack Obama on Friday condemned the shooting and said the FBI would be investigating. Relatives of the victims have said it was a hate crime, but that has not been substantiated by police. The shooting allegedly was precipitated by a spat over parking spaces in the community shared by the accused and the victims.
