'I'm way, way ahead with the Hispanics'

Donald Trump has touched down at the US -Mexico border.

The reality TV star turned Republican candidate brought his campaign to Laredo, Texas. Mr Trump is currently leading national GOP polls amid frustration from the Republican National Convention for his comments on Senator John McCain and Mexican immigrants.

The local patrol unit, the National Border Patrol Council Local 2455, released a statement saying they would not court Mr Trump during his visit.

"After careful consideration of all the factors involved in this event and communicating with members of the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) at the National level, it has been decided by Local 2455 to pull out of all events involving Donald Trump."

Mr Trump and his campaign still moved forward.

"Mexico is booming. Its doing very well, better than anyone has every thought. I don't know if that's good for America but it's good for Mexico," Mr Trump said.

"I'm way, way ahead with the Hispanics."

Protesters met the Republican, who previously made inscindiary remarks about Mexican immigrants calling them "rapists" and "drug dealers."

After recently considering running with a third-party, Mr Trump also said he hopes to run as a Republican. He also took a jab at Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton: "Hillary is the worst Secretary of State in our country's history and I will easily beat her."
