An elderly woman has been rushed to hospital after a woman attempting suicide accidentally landed on top of her as she fell from her third storey window.

The unnamed person jumped from the window in Manhattan, New York as the 71-year-old woman was walking below.

She was rushed to hospital with serious injuries - but it is believed she will survive. The woman who jumped from the building later died in hospital.

One eyewitness, Andre Ferrier, told ABC News 7: "I heard a man scream and as soon as I turned. I was about 10ft away from the woman when she hit the ground."

Another witness said the falling woman's husband and several others rushed outside to help and the elderly woman on the ground seemed hurt and "a little hysterical" but was otherwise stable.

A neighbour of the woman who died, Ann Reilly, said: "She was a very sweet woman, very sweet, and she used to come in and sit down and talk.

"I was sick, I got depressed and my brother was upset, we were all upset, we never thought of something like that somebody jumping out the window like that."
