Forget the traditional T-shirts, bumper stickers and pin badges. This election's hottest accessory is a feisty slogan scrawled in black marker pen on the back of your hand.

In a move that recalls its hopey changey ethos of 2008, President Obama's campaign has asked supporters to cover a few inches of spare flesh with a short message explaining "what our country most needs". Volunteers are then invited to upload an image of themselves to social networking sites, under the hashtag #forall. It's not all been plain sailing, though. The Republican governor of Texas, Rick Perry, tweeted a shot of his hands covered with the words $16 trillion. Or: "how much Obama added to the national debt #forall our children."
