Canadian school children have extended a warm welcome to Syrian refugees entering the country.

After the first plane carrying 163 Syrian refugees to be resettled in Canada landed in Toronto, Canada's public broadcaster filmed their first steps towards a new life.

The video, flimed by CBC, shows Syrian refugees being registered by staff from the International Organisation for Migration in Beirut.

"In Canada," Michelle Cameron, Canada's ambassador to Lebanon, told a refugee, "we believe that your heart is big enough to love Syria and to love Canada."

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government was elected in October on the promise of accepting 25,000 Syrian refugees.

He met the refugees in person at Toronto Pearson airport.

According to data released in September, the UK has accepted 216 Syrian refugees. They would be able to fit on a single London Underground train - with seats to spare.
