State could see first-ever 100+ degrees day in April on Wednesday

Temperatures in Las Vegas are set to reach a record 100 degrees this week, prompting excessive heat warnings for residents in the city.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), high temperatures from the first heat of the year are expected to reach up to 97 to 103 in Las Vegas.

The predictions of “dangerously hot conditions” have forced the service to issue an urgent "excessive heat warning" that will remain in effect until Thursday.

100 degrees has never before been recorded in April in Las Vegas, according to NWS.

The service warns that: “Extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.”

While they acknowledged that residents would be used to 100+ temperatures during its summer, it noted that the heat normally would not rise this high “not this early nor this quickly.”

“Normally we have all spring to acclimate, so this heat may catch many off guard,” the NWS tweeted.

The service stated that temperatures will continue to increase early in the and reach a peak by Wednesday.

“A warmup will continue through mid-week, peaking by Wednesday, which will likely result in the first 100+ degree day in April for Las Vegas ever,” the service wrote.

The excessive heat warning advised that residents should be prepared to deal with the high temperatures.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbours. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances," the warning said.
