A man has died after a drunken attempt to take a golf cart for a joyride saw the vehicle veer off and roll down an embankment, completely overturning.

Robert M. Moore, 49, suffered serious injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene in Chester Township, Ohio, WOIO reports.

Police are now investigating the crash involving the E-Z Go Golf Cart. Officers said speed and alcohol contributed to the incident.

The crash happened after Mr Moore and two friends, Craig L. Franks, 42, and Vicky L. White, 47, were riding in the gold cart at around 1 am on Sunday morning.

Mr Franks was sat behind the wheel of the vehicle as it veered to the left and rolled off the side of the road, rolled over an embankment and overturned, ejecting all three of the passengers in the process.

Authorities said Mr Moore suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Both Mr Franks and Ms White were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Mr Franks has been charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol (OVI), unsafe speed for conditions and failure to maintain reasonable control. He faces additional charges following the outcome of a blood test.
