Mitt Romney set to announce today his decision on White House run

Many observers were surprised 67-year-old was considering third attempt to become president

All eyes are on Mitt Romney today amid a flurry of reports that he is going to announce whether or not he will make a third run for the White House.

Mr Romney has invited supporters to join him for an 11am conference call on Friday for an “update” on his plans.

“According to people familiar with the thinking of the two-time presidential candidate, Romney has now gathered all the information he needs to reach a conclusion about whether to run a third time,” Bloomberg News reported.

Many had assumed that the 2012 Republican presidential nominee would not consider another run. But three weeks ago he announced he was considering his options and assessing whether or not there was sufficient support.

Opinion polls suggest Mr Romney would be among the strongest of a large field of possible candidates, although many within the Republican establishment have been at best lukewarm, saying the 67-year-old has already had two chances.

The Washington Post said those who have spoken to Mr Romney said they came away from the conversations believing he was likely to run again for several reasons, including that he views the emerging Republican field of contenders as too weak to defeat likely Democratic candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

He believes he would be a better candidate after his experiences in 2012, and that he sensed an opportunity to win.
