Mother of five has both legs amputated after saving car crash victim

A mother of five had to have her legs amputated after she was hit by a car while helping another driver.

Danielle Hagmann, 30, was driving home in Fort Myers, Florida, when the driver in front of her lost control of her vehicle and crashed.

Ms Hagmann got out of her car to help the distressed driver and called 911. As she was waiting on the side of the road for the emergency services to arrive, another car came crashing into her and pinned her in between two vehicles, Global News reports.

The mother told television network NBC News WBBH she could feel the blood draining from her and that she was going into shock.

“I remember telling them [emergency services] 'I'm not going to die out here because I have kids and I’m coming home to them’. They better get me to the right place because I’m not dying because they need me and I’m not going anywhere,” she said.

Ms Hagmann has five children aged between eight months and 10 years old.

“I remember not being able to feel anything here [top of her legs] but feeling phantom down my leg and thinking ‘Oh that’s not good’,” she said.

Her mother, Sandy Rieser, told WBBH her daughter kept apologising and said: “I was just trying to help someone.”

Ms Hagmann’s wife, Lyndsey Johns, said the emergency services did not think she would make it to the hospital but she described her partner as a fighter.

Since the accident, Ms Hagmann has made significant progress and is able to sit up straight on her own.

“I am happy, and I am in good spirits, and I can’t wait to see my kids,” she said.

After hearing Ms Hagmann’s story the owners of a company which makes artificial limbs, Joshua Ryder and his sister Laura Ryder, said they wanted to help and donate the mother a first set of prosthetics, USA Today reports.

Ms Hagmann reportedly had no medical insurance and remains in an intensive care unit.

“Those 30 seconds of my life have changed my entire life. Yes I’m in pain and yes I’m worried about my kids but I’m going to get out of here and I’m going to walk,” she told News Press.
