Mother-of-five shot dead by police in Chicago

A police officer in Chicago shot dead a mother-of-five as she was caught in crossfire.

Bettie Jones, the 55-year-old mother, was shot when police were called to a domestic incident in the building she resided in.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police were confronted with an aggressive man, 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier, who police later opened fire upon.

A stray bullet hit Ms Jones, who later died in hospital.

"Upon arrival, officers were confronted by a combative subject resulting in the discharging of the officer's weapon which fatally wounded two individuals,” a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department told the Evening Standard.

"The 55-year-old female victim was accidentally struck and tragically killed. The department extends it's deepest condolences to the victim's family and friends."

The shooting comes amid an investigation into the Chicago Police Department after a video emerged of a police officer shooting Laquan McDonald 16 times in 2014.
