Twitter users have hailed a Canadian cartoonist who created the perfect tribute to Nathan Cirillo, the soldier shot dead while guarding Ottawa's National War Memorial on Wednesday morning.
The very moving image was produced for Thursday's edition of Halifax's The Chronicle Herald by cartoonist Bruce MacKinnon , and can be viewed online at their website here .
The cartoon shows the bronze figures of the memorial, representing those who fought and died in the First World War, stooping down to pick up the body of the corporal and welcome him into their number.
It was among the many tributes that have poured in for 24-year-old Corporal Cirillo, who was a part-time reservist serving with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada regiment.
Police have confirmed that the incident involved a single gunman, who killed Corporal Cirillo at the base of the memorial before driving to Parliament's Central Block, where he was killed in an exchange of fire with police and security staff. The shooting suspect has been identified as 32-year-old Michael Zehaf-Bibeau from Quebec.
