People are tweeting #ItsBiggerThanKSU to support a black student accused of harassment by a college advisor

A Georgia university is conducting an investigation after a black student was accused of harassment by a teacher for allegedly attempting to keep an academic appointment.

Kevin Bruce, a Kennesaw State University student, uploaded a 30-second video of his apparent encounter with Abby Dawson, KSU’s Director of Advising and Internships. The video has gone viral and Twitter uses are using the hashtag #ItsBiggerThanKSU to share their own experiences with alleged racism.

In the video, Mr Bruce says that he wasn’t harassing the teacher, but she replies stating that “sitting around until someone is available is harassing them,” before contacting the campus police. He also posted emails with Ms Dawson where he continued to have a hard time scheduling an appointment.

Tammy DeMel, KSU communications director, told The Chronicle of Higher Education that administrators were getting to the bottom of what exactly happened.

“We’re just trying to put the rest of the context around [the video]” said Ms DeMel. The university also has acknowledged the issue on Twitter.

“We are aware of the video and situation. Thanks for sharing your concern with us. A formal complaint process has begun.”
