A British man who was convicted as a teenager of carrying out a vicious racist killing in New York that was described as a lynching has been deported back to the UK after serving his sentence.

Jon Lester completed 15 years of a 20-year sentence he received for killing a black man in the Queens area of the city in 1986. He was convicted of manslaughter and assault for leading a gang of white teenagers in an attack on three black men whose car had broken down. One of them, Michael Griffith, 23, was chased into the road, where he was hit by a car and killed. The white youths beat up one of the other black men. The third ran away.

Lester's mother, Jean Lester Holmes, who lives in Florida, said her son arrived in Britain in May and was working in a factory at an undisclosed location."He wants to leave his past behind," she said.
